Every now and then, something appears that reminds us just how long Container Homes Designer Domain has been involved in modular housing.

Recently, we discovered a YouTube video created by someone completely independent of CHDD presenting one of our very early projects.

What made the discovery particularly interesting was the age of the project.

CHDD supplied this project almost 16 years ago.

We did not commission the video. We did not produce the presentation. We simply came across someone else discussing and presenting a project that formed part of the early history of our company.

For us, that makes it especially worth sharing.

Before Modular Housing Became Mainstream

Today, modular construction, prefabricated housing, tiny homes and steel-framed buildings are discussed everywhere.

Almost 16 years ago, the market was very different.

When CHDD was working on projects like this one, modular housing was still viewed by many people as an unusual alternative to conventional construction.

We believed otherwise.

We saw the potential for homes to be manufactured in a controlled environment, transported to site and completed using a much more efficient construction process.

The basic idea was straightforward:

Why manufacture almost everything individually on a building site when so much of a home can be engineered and manufactured before it arrives?

That principle remains at the heart of what we do today.

Seeing One of Our Early Projects Again

Finding this project being presented on YouTube nearly 16 years later brought back a lot of memories.

Our systems, specifications and designs have developed enormously since those early projects, but the fundamental concept remains remarkably similar.

Build as much as practical in a controlled manufacturing environment.

Reduce unnecessary site construction.

Use steel to create a strong structural platform.

Design buildings that can be transported.

And continually improve the product through every project completed.

What began as an alternative method of building has developed into a sophisticated modular construction system.

It is important to understand that CHDD has also evolved considerably over those years.

Our current homes should not simply be thought of as converted shipping containers.

And sometimes the most valuable lessons come from the projects that challenged you the most.

Nearly 16 years of this experience cannot be created overnight.

CHDD has worked through the evolution of modular housing rather than simply arriving after modular construction became fashionable.

An Independent Video Makes This Story More Interesting

There is another reason we wanted to share this video.

It wasn't made by us.

Companies can obviously photograph their best projects, produce promotional videos and tell people how good their products are.

This is different.

Someone independently found the project interesting enough to create a presentation about it many years after it was originally supplied.

That is something we are proud to see.

We are sharing the video as an interesting piece of CHDD history and as a reminder of how far both our company and the modular housing industry have travelled.

The Industry Has Changed. So Have We.

The projects we are working on today are considerably more advanced than the buildings we were supplying in our early years.

Engineering requirements have increased.

Energy-efficiency expectations have increased.

Bushfire, wind and environmental requirements have increased.

Customers expect better bathrooms, kitchens, glazing, insulation, finishes and architectural design.

Manufacturing technology has improved.

And CHDD has changed with it.

We continue working with designers, engineers, manufacturers, builders and consultants to develop buildings suitable for real Australian conditions.

Our objective is no longer simply to manufacture something that can be transported.

It is to manufacture a genuine home that happens to be modular.

That distinction is important.

Looking back at a project from almost 16 years ago gives us an opportunity to appreciate where CHDD started.

Looking at what we manufacture today shows where the journey has taken us.

The technology will continue to change.

Designs will continue to improve.

More manufacturing will eventually move away from traditional construction sites and into controlled production environments.

But our underlying philosophy remains the same:
