1. Feel Lucky
This is a field that has greatly impacted or created some of the greatest civilizations throughout history. Architecture is one of the coolest majors you can embark on. People would look up to you as a unique and creative individual most of the time. That's why you need to be proud of yourself and begin the journey with a smile.
2. Grow A Thicker Skin
Now that you have entered one of the most revered fields of education in the world, try to maintain this happiness when you experience difficulties along the way. Make sure that you always remain optimistic. When you work on an architectural project day and night and receive little or no appreciation for your efforts, you can always feel depressed. But you should always remember that you are not alone. This is the normal life of an architect.
Every successful architect has gone through failure and rejection just like you. Don't give up just because you experience these emotions. Learn from these experiences and keep moving forward. Only you can turn every obstacle in your favour. You will always come out as a stronger professional and become better and wiser over time.
3. Leave The Comfort Zone
There are so many crazy ideas that have come from a paper into a real-life building. Such ideas may have seemed impossible to build at first. But these are the projects that can take an architect up the success ladder.
4. Verbal Presentation
If you are a good communicator and presenter, your project will sell no matter what. In fact, just because of the speaking skills of the individual, average quality projects have been appreciated far more than some of the excellent projects out there. Even though this trait comes naturally to some people, it can always be acquired.
Eddie at The Driveway Doctor tells us that, “Make sure you rehearse and present in front of the mirror and examine your body language as you speak. But when you speak, make it sound like you never prepared for the presentation. In fact, great talk will naturally come out of you depending on your passion for the project.”
Don't forget to highlight the strengths of your project during the presentation. Make it sound as if you are super convinced of your project, which is important to convince the audience too.
5. Digital Presentation
A graphically stunning presentation can make the average project look great even if it isn't technically perfect. Take a look at Pinterest for great architectural presentations and try to apply some of the relevant visuals to your project.
6. Don't Be Stubborn
Michael Yousef of All Image Architects says “you should believe in your ideas while being open to critique. Even though no one will stop you from genuinely defending your architectural project, you should consider constructive comments from colleagues, clients, and mentors.”
7. Be Social
So, if you’re a budding young architect - or even if you’re a bit older and getting started for the first time - there’s plenty of info for you to stew on and take on board. Much like planning a building structure, an architecture career isn’t created overnight.
